Hands cleaning a Hope & Wild ceramic candle vessel under running water at a white sink

How to Clean a Refillable Candle Vessel (And Use It Again & Again)

One of the most common questions we get asked at Hope & Wild is: "How do I clean my candle vessel so I can refill it?" The good news? It's much easier than you might think — and once you've done it once, it becomes second nature. Here's our step-by-step guide to getting your vessel perfectly clean and ready for its next life.

Why Refilling Makes Sense

Traditional candles are designed to be used once and thrown away — vessel and all. At Hope & Wild, we think that's a waste of something beautiful. Our hand-thrown ceramic vessels are built to last for years, designed to be refilled with a new candle refill or transformed into a reed diffuser using our ceramic converter lid. One vessel, endless possibilities.

What You'll Need

  • Hot (not boiling) water
  • Washing up liquid
  • A soft cloth or sponge

Step-by-Step: How to Clean Your Hope & Wild Vessel

Step 1 — Soften the remaining wax

Once your candle has burned down to approximately 10mm of wax remaining (the point at which you should stop burning), fill it with hot water, and leave it to soak for 3-5 minutes. The heat will soften the wax and cause it to loosen from the sides of the vessel.

Step 2 — Remove the wax

Once softened, the remaining wax and wick base should float to the surface or peel away easily. Pour any melted wax remaining into the bin, along with the used wick.

Step 3 — Wash the vessel

Wash the vessel thoroughly with warm soapy water, using a soft cloth or sponge to remove any residue. Our Rapeseed & Coconut Wax is naturally easy to clean and shouldn't leave any stubborn marks.

Step 4 — Dry completely

This step is important — make sure your vessel is completely dry before adding a new refill. Any moisture can affect how your candle burns or how your diffuser oil performs.

Step 5 — Refill and enjoy

Once clean and dry, simply drop in your new Hope & Wild candle refill, or fit your ceramic diffuser converter lid and add your chosen diffuser oil and reeds. Your ritual continues.

Switching Between Candle and Diffuser?

If you're switching from a candle to a reed diffuser (or vice versa), it's especially important to clean the vessel thoroughly to remove any wax or oil residue. When switching from diffuser oil to candle use, ensure there is absolutely no flammable oil residue remaining before lighting.
