Hope & Wild Rain on the Greenhouse refillable candle and reed diffuser collection in a rain-soaked greenhouse

Essential Oils vs Fragrance Oils: Is Natural Really Better?

"Are your fragrances natural?"

It's a question we're asked more and more — and it's a really good one.

As consumers, we've become much more conscious about what we bring into our homes. We read labels. We look for products that are kinder to the planet. And somewhere along the way, "natural" became shorthand for "better", while "synthetic" started to sound like something we should avoid.

But fragrance is a little more complicated than that.

At Hope & Wild, our current home fragrance collection uses carefully selected premium fragrance oils rather than being an essential-oil-only range. And we made that choice deliberately.

So let's talk about why.

First: what actually is a fragrance oil?

A fragrance oil can contain a carefully formulated combination of naturally derived and synthetic aromatic ingredients.

Synthetic simply means that a fragrance molecule has been created or reproduced through science rather than extracted directly from a plant.

And that isn't automatically a bad thing.

In fact, the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) makes an important point: whether an ingredient is natural or synthetic doesn't determine whether it's safe.

What matters is the individual substance, the amount being used and how people are exposed to it.

Essential oils themselves are made up of naturally occurring chemical compounds — and some of those compounds can also cause irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive people.

So "natural" does not automatically mean safer.

Why do we use premium fragrance oils?

Quite simply: performance, consistency, creativity and choice.

Think about a Hope & Wild fragrance such as Cashmere in Candlelight.

We want to create an entire atmosphere — warmth, softness, black vanilla, oud and that feeling of curling up at home as evening draws in.

Or Rain on the Greenhouse, which is designed to capture that wonderfully fresh combination of cucumber, melon and the feeling of stepping into a greenhouse after the rain.

These aren't simply single botanical scents.

They're stories.

Using professionally developed fragrance oils gives us a much broader fragrance palette and allows different notes to work together to create those layered, complex scents.

It also allows us to achieve consistency. Your favourite refill should smell like the fragrance you fell in love with the first time.

But aren't essential oils healthier?

Not necessarily.

This is probably the biggest misconception surrounding home fragrance.

Essential oils can be wonderful — and we love them. In fact, we're developing something rather exciting with them for Hope & Wild.

But an essential oil isn't automatically safer simply because it came from a plant.

Natural fragrance materials contain allergens too. Some essential oils and their components have restrictions on the concentrations at which they should be used.

That doesn't make essential oils "bad" either.

It simply means natural doesn't automatically equal safe, just as synthetic doesn't automatically equal harmful.

Good formulation matters more than the label.

And there can be another side to "natural": sustainability

This is something that's particularly important to us.

Producing natural fragrance ingredients can require growing, harvesting and processing large quantities of plant material.

Depending on the ingredient and how it is grown, that can mean agricultural land, water, machinery, fertiliser and other resources.

Synthetic fragrance molecules can sometimes recreate or complement natural materials without requiring the same quantity of botanical material — and can even provide alternatives to rare or resource-intensive ingredients.

So when we're talking about sustainability, the answer isn't always as simple as:

Natural = sustainable. Synthetic = unsustainable.

The reality is much more nuanced.

For us, sustainability means looking at the whole product.

That's why Hope & Wild is built around Refill | Reuse | Reimagine.

Instead of throwing away another beautiful candle jar when the wax is finished, you keep your ceramic vessel.

Refill it.

Change the fragrance.

Or convert it from a candle into a reed diffuser and back again.

Because reducing waste doesn't stop at the fragrance inside the vessel.

What we choose NOT to put into our fragrances matters too

We're incredibly selective about the fragrance oils we use at Hope & Wild.

Our fragrances are chosen to be:

✓ Phthalate-free
✓ Paraben-free
✓ Vegan
✓ Cruelty-free

Our candles are also made using 100% rapeseed and coconut wax, rather than paraffin wax.

For us, luxury fragrance shouldn't simply smell beautiful. We want to be thoughtful about the ingredients and materials we choose throughout the entire product.

So... are fragrance oils "bad"?

No.

And essential oils aren't automatically "better".

There are beautifully formulated fragrance oils and beautifully formulated essential-oil blends — just as there can be poor examples of both.

The question we'd rather ask is:

What is in the product? How has it been formulated? And what choices has the brand made about the ingredients it uses?

At Hope & Wild, we choose premium fragrance oils because they allow us to create sophisticated, complex fragrances while maintaining the performance and consistency we want from our candles and reed diffusers.

And we deliberately avoid ingredients such as phthalates and parabens in our fragrance collection.

Does that mean we don't believe in essential oils?

Quite the opposite.

We love what essential oils can bring to fragrance when they're used for the right purpose.

And in January 2027, we'll be introducing a very different side of Hope & Wild...

A new collection created around essential oils and botanical fragrance.

Rather than replacing our existing collection, it will sit alongside it.

Because we don't believe you should have to choose between science and nature.

Sometimes you want a beautifully layered fragrance that makes your home smell incredible.

Sometimes you want the botanical character and ritual of essential oils.

And sometimes you'll want both.

That's exactly where Hope & Wild is going.

But until then?

Light The Orangery. Fill the room with Cashmere in Candlelight. Turn your vessel into The Secret Garden. Discover Rain on the Greenhouse.

And enjoy them knowing that synthetic doesn't mean bad — and natural doesn't automatically mean better.

It means we've chosen the right ingredients for the fragrance we're trying to create.

Beautiful fragrance. Thoughtful choices. Less waste.

Refill | Reuse | Reimagine.
